An Interview with Namsie Lesito

Principal at the crèche

What is your main role and purpose at DNCC?

My main role is Principal of DNCC and my purpose is to make sure that the children are safe and fed correctly while in my care. I ensure that caregivers are teaching the children correctly according to their age group, at the same time as inspiring the caregivers as much as I can.

What brought you to DNCC?

I was recruited by a lady called Desiree to help out at the crèche on a part-time basis. However, once I saw how much the children were suffering in terms of the lack of proper education and the absence of a stable programme for the children and caregivers, I decided to take on the position full-time.

Where were you working before DNCC?

I was working as a facilitator/trainer for EDP Seta on a programme called Grow Early Learning Trust.

What are your short and long term goals with DNCC?

First thing on my list of short term goals is to make sure that all my caregivers go on a development course, at present only four have been. My long term goal is to get land approved so we can start to build a new crèche with better facilities.

This will enable us to register with different departments such as the Department of Welfare and Health and Safety, and qualify for many benefits that will help sustain what we have achieved so far and aid further development at the crèche.

Since I have joined DNCC myself and the caregivers have come a long way in creating a proper structure and programme for the children Since I have joined DNCC myself and the caregivers have come a long way in creating a proper structure and programme for the children

What do you find the most rewarding about working at DNCC?

Seeing the children developing holistically and seeing them start formal education.

With running a crèche there are so many challenges that you face, what gives you the strength to carry on with the positive attitude you carry out at all times?

The support from eg solutions, the community and the staff.

If you could change one thing at the crèche what would it be?

At this point nothing, since I have joined DNCC myself and the caregivers have come a long way in creating a proper structure and programme for the children. It’s all about small steps, and I know that one day I will reach my long term goal.
