This organisation was inspired by the South African President,
Thabo Mbeki’s 2002 National Address. In this address he urges
citizens to “Vuka Uzenzele”, which means “wake up and do something
for yourself”. This is a life-long programme that will try to
eliminate poverty; nurture, love, protect and care for the
children.
DNCC Start Up
Doornkop Needy Children’s Centre aims to create jobs for its
community, assisting Government to empower people with skills. We
believe in “Bana Pele” meaning “the children first”. The children of
today are the Government of tomorrow. Today the school has a total
of 14 staff (appendix 1), two Principals, a deputy Principal, 10
care givers, and two cooks. The DNCC was registered as a Non Profit
Organisation on the 17th March 2003 and the registration number is:
025093 N.P.O. It has a project manager: Sipho Moumakwe, a board
which is about to be renewed in line with registration as a PBO
(Public Benefit Organisation (appendix 2) and a patron.
DNCC Staff Compliment
Our staff consists of 14 permanent staff and a number of
dedicated volunteers recruited from the various Doornkop township
extensions - mothers who have the love of children and their
community at heart. The volunteers are aware that the
organisation cannot yet afford appropriate remuneration but are
nevertheless prepared to continue offering their services. Currently
the 14 permanent staff are paid a very modest monthly stipend
ranging from R1000 (USD 160) for the Principal to R400 (USD 65) for
the care-givers, it is our hope that we will increase these amounts
as the crèche becomes better funded through word of mouth and
greater awareness. It is also our immediate intention to continue
providing the volunteers with weekly food hampers to alleviate their
own desperate circumstances as well as to provide some form of
school uniform for the kids.
